I read on Runner's World that you should have GU or something for any runs over one hour. Based on the tone of the info, everyone over the age of 2 knew this already and I am officially a dummy. Anyway, I'm planning to try the following flavors this week:
Chocolate Outrage
Lemon Sublime
Strawberry Banana
Hopefully after tomorrow's 8 miles I can report back on the taste and the effectiveness of these things. Crossing my fingers that they don't cause projectile vomiting - a real buzz-killer for a runner's endorphin high.
Meanwhile, I have signed up for this 10K just because I must have a Tshirt that says "Hog Jog." Poetry!
I'm a huge fan of the vanilla, the tri-berry & the strawberry banana....be forewarned, they aren't instant energy & pay attention to whether you're eating one "with caffeine" or without, as it will make a difference. Just for reference, I typically use a strawberry banana for my first one since it's not caffeinated. My body tends to do well in my triathlons with one Gu per hour w/about 100 other calories (sports drink), long runs I stick with the one Gu since I don't tend to burn as much.
ReplyDeleteIt's entirely personal as to what brand & flavors you like, but I don't think you'll vomit...if Gu isn't right then you can try PowerGel, HammerGel & any of the others out there. Also be open to trying different frequencies - some people like them less often than every hour. Think about how many calories you typically burn in a workout or day's time.
